Social Insurance Number – All you need to know

The Social Insurance Number (SIN) is a 9 digit unique number that a Canadian citizen, a permanent resident or a temporary resident needs to work in Canada. You would also need a SIN to access government program and benefits

Applying for a SIN

You can apply for a SIN online or by mail. If you are unable to apply online or by mail, you have the option to apply in-person

  • APPLY ONLINE:
    • Online application : https://sin-nas.canada.ca/en/Sin/
    • You must provide the following documents:
      • a digital copy of an original valid primary identity document
      • a digital copy of an original valid secondary document
      • a digital copy of a proof of address
  • APPLY BY MAIL:
    • You must provide the following documents:
      • an original valid primary identity document
      • a completed and signed SIN application form
    • Send your completed application form and original documents (photocopies are not accepted) to Service Canada Social Insurance Registration Office, PO Box 7000 Bathurst NB E2A 4T1 Canada
  • APPLY IN-PERSON:
    • Find your nearest Service Canada location and make an appointment
    • You must provide the following documents:
      • an original valid primary identify document
      • an original valid secondary document
  • DOCUMENTS
    • Primary identity document is an official document that proves your identity and status in Canada. Few examples include Canadian birth certificate, Permanent Resident card, Record of Landing, Work Permit, Verification of status document
    • Secondary document is an official document that confirms your identity. Few examples include Passport, Driving License, Canadian government issued ID
    • Provide a supporting document if the name on your primary identity document is different from one on your secondary document or from SIN application form. Few examples of supporting document includes certificate of marriage, legal name change certificate, adoption order

Notes

  • A SIN is a unique number that is issued to an individual and it cannot be used by anyone else
  • International students and temporary workers get a SIN starting with number 9, which indicates that you are a temporary resident in Canada
  • If you are a temporary resident, make sure to keep your SIN valid by renewing your SIN each time you extend your temporary residency in Canada
  • If you don’t remember your SIN, you can find it on : your income tax return, tax slips, record of employment, RRSP contribution, etc.
